Fraus

Last Sunday, for brunch, my husband and I braved the cold, and drove out to North Melbourne. I gently persuaded him that we should go to Fraus, on Victoria St, after reading a write-up on their delicious crepes in the Saturday Age. It was a little hard to find on the ultra-long street, but we eventually found it quite near to the Errol St corner (if that helps anyone).

I love crepes. They bring back memories of my tour through France with my friend Deb, especially when we ate them in a gorgeous market square on a warm summer night in Tours.

When we entered the small, colourful cafe, an intoxicating aroma filled the air. This amazed me, as I could smell it even with my hardcore cold. We got a corner table and ordered coffees. Unfortunately, after we did this, we received menus which gave a 2 page list of different flavours of hot chocolates that were available. Apparently, this is Fraus' other speciality. I guess we'll just have to try them another time!

They have a breakfast menu, which includes crepes and galettes, the buckwheat pancakes. My husband, who gets sad when they don't have his regular brunch choice on every menu, got very excited to see the salmon benedict galette.

The bits of salmon fillet and egg (not poached) were inside the pancake, with the 'hollandaise' on the side. The hollandaise tasted (and looked) more like cream, sadly, and was not up to standard. The crepe was tasty, but not something he would go out of his way to order again.

I was feeling morose with my cold, and needed something to make me just a touch happier. A chocolate crepe had to be chosen. I had the 'strawberry bounty', which came with fresh strawberries, bits of coconut and melted chocolate.

Because I couldn't taste very well, I can't really properly critique my crepe. All I know is, I didn't like the crunchy bits of coconut, and for me, the crepe didn't really work. I would like to go back to Fraus, with all five senses working 100%, before I can make a definitive statement. Although I do think Madame Sousou, (in my humble opinion), do make a better crepe.

Saying that, the staff were friendly and seemed to really enjoy their work.
